Polyethylene film is a plastic made from complex polymers from which are formed very large molecules that link and cross-link such common elements as carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and chlorine. It is by the linking of these elements together in varying patterns that it is possible to form plastics which are resilient or rigid, inflammable or fireproof, transparent or opaque, soft or hard. It is in the pliableness that polyethylene is a true plastic, and it is this characteristic that has led to its rapid application to certain problems in the construction field. There are many ways polyethylene is being used in construction. Five main ways would include its use in curing, as a vapor barrier, in form lining, and in tilt-up construction. Polyethylene films are being use in curing because of the preference for methods which provide for the retention of moisture rather than for replacement. As a vapor barrier, polyethylene films block the water vapor coming up from the ground underneath a building. In form lining, forms are lined with strong paper and tape coated with polyethylene. The technique is said to make concrete smooth enough to paint without any special preparation. Polyethylene film is also well adapted to the problem of curing tilt-up wall panels. It has an additional interesting application as a bond breaker between the wall panel and the bade slab on which the pouring is done.
